When someone thinks of a desert, they usually think of those hot, desolate places, but the Sahara Desert is home to many fun activities. When I went to the Sahara, I got to ride camels, camp in the desert, watch the sunset, and much more! If you’re wondering, “Why the Sahara Desert?”, then this travel diary of my personal experiences in the wonderful Sahara Desert will give you so many reasons to go!
The Road to the Sahara Desert
Getting to the Sahara Desert is an interesting experience in itself. We got on a flight from Seville, Spain, to Marrakech, Morocco. From there, we took a tour led by a Berber tour guide, Mohammad. He was an excellent guide and taught us a lot about Morocco’s culture, landmarks, and history! Along the 2-day drive to the Sahara, we ate so many absolutely amazing traditional Moroccan foods: couscous, dates, tangine, and more!
Along the way, we also saw the UNESCO world heritage site Aït Benhaddou and drove down the zigzagging road in the Dades Gorges…it was a super fun ride!
Riding a Camel
Offering spectacular views of the Sahara’s orange sand dunes and a beautiful sunset, camel rides should definitely be a part of your “must-do list” in the Sahara Desert.
Sand and Sunset
The Sahara is a breathtakingly beautiful place. One of the things you must see in the desert is the colorful sunset. We climbed up one of the sand dunes to watch the sunset! You can see the sun sink slowly below the skyline while sitting atop the tallest sand dune.
The sand is also something you should check out. It’s softer than any beaches’ sand! As the sun set, I also collected some sand in a little bottle as a souvenir!
Camping
Camping in the desert was another one of my favorite activities! Our camp was included in our tour, and it was a great experience! We arrived at the camp via camel and spent the night in the desert. The evening began with views of a colorful desert sunset and delicious food! There were also many dances and music as well. All the campers were encouraged to join in the festivities.
The Sahara Desert may be thought of as hot during the day and cold during the night, but it is still a very nice place to camp. We made our camping excursion during the winter season, and the temperatures weren’t a problem at all.
Whether you are having a short or long trip to the Sahara Desert, I highly recommend camping, a camel ride, and, of course, enjoying the sunset atop the sand dunes! The Sahara Desert is a unique experience you won’t find anywhere else.
